COOL GRAPHIC: Where NFL Quarterbacks Throw, Visualized

Jamie Condliffe at Gizmodo passes along this way-cool illustration of NFL passes by Kirk Goldsberry:

It’s very rare for an NFL quarterback to complete a pass in which the intended receiver is standing more than 45 yards from the line of scrimmage. In fact, NFL quarterbacks only attempted 175 such throws during the entire regular season last year, and only 48 resulted in completions. Joe Flacco was responsible for six of them.

Until recently, this kind of factoid was hard to uncover, but like every other sport, football’s analytics are evolving quickly. Thanks to new forms of data and emerging kinds of analyses, teams, media, and fans are gaining new insights into on-field performances. I have been exploring one such data set, a giant collection of highly detailed passing data created and maintained by ESPN’s Stats & Information group...

...During the 2012 regular season, NFL quarterbacks attempted more than 19,000 passes and completed more than 11,500; the chart above shows the location of nearly every pass. Dots are placed in spots nearby the receiver or the intended receiver. In the cases of out-of-bounds throwaways, those dots are placed at the sideline near where the ball went out of bounds. The color of the dot corresponds to the league’s overall completion percentage in that zone...

If you're a football fan, check out all the graphs. The level of detail will blow your mind and -- not that you need it -- help you kick butt in Fantasy Football.

COLOR MRI SCANS: Your Brain Before and After a 20-Minute Walk

Interesting verification of the synergy between mental and physical health.

This great graphic is really an MRI of the brain. It was posted by Maria Popova on her always stimulating blog, Explore. The MRI was provided by Dr. Chuck Hillman from the University of Illinois...

...It shows that after a 20-minute walk there is increased brain activity and the particular type of activity is generally associated with happiness.

It is a useful reminder of the interconnectedness of the mind and body (with apologies to the usual dualism presented). It is also a good reminder that by exercising our bodies, we also reinvigorate of brains.

Interestingly, Biff Spackle was able to secure an MRI scan of a typical progressive's brain.

42: Jackie Robinson [Papa B]

Guest post by Papa B

Mama B and I saw 42 last night and it was a wonderful movie. It brought to mind my early memories of baseball and my first encounter seeing Jackie Robinson.

In 1944, we were living in Rogers Park in Chicago in an apartment on Sherwin Avenue next to Lake Michigan. I was 7 years old and fell in love with a girl named Jill Weintraub who lived in a house on the corner. You must understand how unusual this was. There were almost no houses in Rogers Park. Everyone we knew lived in small apartments in apartment buildings.

But Jill lived in this huge corner house and I was truly impressed. It turned out that her father was Phil Weintraub, a first baseman for the New York Giants. During the war years, many of the baseball stars (Williams, Musial, Feller, etc.) were in the military. In fact, Ted Williams was a pilot and served in three wars if memory serves. Because of the loss of their stars, teams seriously considered discontinuing baseball but fortunately they reconsidered and staffed the teams with many "has-beens" and "never will be's".

Phil Weintraub was a better than average player and had some pretty good stats. As I recall, he took me (with my girl friend) to my first game, where the Giants faced Cubs. As an aside, in those days, players made very little money and all worked in winter jobs. Phil worked for Kraft Cheese and after the war, when everyone returned, he lost his job to Johnny Mize, and moved to LA with Kraft and took my girlfriend away.

I started going to games regularly in 1947. From 1947 to about 1953, I would see 40 to 50 games a year, all at Wrigley Field. In 1946, we had moved from Rogers Park to Highland Park and I would take the North Shore from Highland Park to Howard Street, change to the “EL” and take it to the ballpark.

The total cost of the day was about $1.25 and I earned the money by mowing lawns for neighbors when the Cubs were on the road. Also, remember that the Cubs only played day games. They were a pathetic team but they were my heroes: Phil Cavaretta, Bill Nicholson, Don Johnson, Eddie Waitkus (“The Natural”) and many other mediocre players.

In those days, the Cubs drew maybe -- I don’t know -- maybe 4,000 or so in attendance. I had the cheapest bleacher seat at .50 and would sit behind the dugout. I knew every player in the league because they were all so close. I knew every batting stance and when I played (which I did almost every day) I would replicate their batting stances. And I was never without my “Who’s Who is Baseball” so I knew all the stats.

In 1947, there had been no mass migration of the Black population from the South. The only Black people I knew were the maids we had who were truly family members.

That summer, the Dodgers came to town in June as I recall and when Jackie Robinson came up to bat, he was greeted with hoots and terrible verbal abuse.

The worst was Charlie Grimm, the Cubs Manager who I could see standing up on the dugout edge uttering the worst words, most of which I had never heard.

I could not see the Cubs players in the dugout but I could hear their cursing and abuse.

But... Jackie Robinson was electric! He was an athlete -- a four-letterman at UCLA -- and he looked like an athlete, unlike most of the players who frankly were soft (remember, this was before any serious conditioning began).

Anyway, when he got on first base, he changed the game. His energy... his excitement... his movement... he gave the game energy.

In 1947, he stole 29 bases for the year. That may pale in comparison to subsequent base-stealing champs, but understand: in those days, an entire team might steal 20 bases for the year. 29 steals was amazing then, especially because he threw off the concentration of the pitcher.

He truly altered the tenor of baseball. I saw him play maybe 12 – 15 times and he never failed to excite me and everyone else. What he accomplished with the adversity he faced will always remain a truly great accomplishment. And Branch Rickey who was the “prime mover” and Dodgers owner was amazingly courageous.

Sorry about the length of this but the movie brought back so many memories and recollections of “yesteryear” and a different world.

IT'S ALL IN THE PARENTING: Man Catches Major League Home Run Ball While Holding a Baby

Hopefully his wife didn't see this:

Nats. Reds. Bases empty, Werth at bat. Sam LeCure on the mound. Werth swings at the first pitch he sees. Deep right-center. Man. Baby. Ball. No glove, no hesitation.

This guy deserves some kind of award.

Brandon Knight's Epic Posterization Kerplodes on Twitter

I don't always watch the NBA, but when I do, I prefer legendary slams.

Let's get one thing straight: Brandon Knight did the right thing. He made the right play, the hard-working play, the courageous play, and there are plenty of other image-conscious NBA players who never would have stepped in there the way he did.

But, that being said — daaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

If you didn't catch the highlight last night and need to get up to speed, here's what happened: Knight's Detroit Pistons were taking on the Los Angeles Clippers Sunday evening. The Clippers — known to sports fans as "Lob City" for their propensity for high-flying alley-oops — ran a lob play for center DeAndre Jordan, who came steaming down the lane with all of his 6-feet-11 inches and 265 pounds hurtling toward the rim. The lob went up. Jordan went up. Knight — who stands 6-foot-3 and weights 189 pounds - went up. The two collided in mid air and Knight went down. Hard. Then the ball bounced off his head.

Words cannot really do a play of such epic viciousness and wanton disregard for human life proper justice, however, so you should just watch the YouTube video embedded above several times...

...The dunk, unsurprisingly, blew up the basketball Twitters, with both Jordan and Knight's names trending worldwide (Knight's name was trending again Monday morning). But it didn't stop there. Someone edited Knight's Wikipedia page to read that he in fact died in the game. Cause of death? DeAndre Jordan...

...And — much like when an unconscious Manny Pacquiao received a derisive meme treatment after being knocked out in a December fight — Internet jokesters were quick to delight in Knight's plight...

To his credit, Knight had a delightful and graceful response.

FOR THE BIG TEN TITLE: Up 5 with the ball and 52 seconds left... #iubb #goblue

The Big Ten -- the best basketball conference in the country this year -- featured a doozy of a final regular season game earlier today. #2 Indiana, seeking its first outright Big Ten title since 1993, visited #7 Michigan on its Senior Day. A Michigan win would cement a three-way tie for the conference title.

The game featured three likely First Team All-Americans -- Michigan guard Trey Burke, IU center Cody Zeller, and IU guard Victor Oladipo -- and they were all intimately involved with the last minute of the game.

1:03: Michigan 70, Indiana 66 - Cody Zeller pump-fakes, drives hard to his left under pressure, and is whistled for traveling. Michigan ball with a four-point lead.

57.5: Will Sheehey fouls Tim Hardaway, Jr. to stop the clock, but Michigan isn't in the bonus yet and will inbound.

53.5: Oladipo fouls Burke off the inbound play. Michigan still isn't in the bonus.

52.0: Off a clever inbound play, Glenn Robinson III gets a breakaway off the inbound and Christian Watford fouls him hard on the arm in pursuit. Analyst Clark Kellogg lobbies for an intentional foul, but the refs huddle and call it a simple foul. Robinson misses the front-end but hits the second. Michigan up 71-66.

39.0: Zeller drives hard from the elbow, misses a lay-in, but grabs his miss and puts it in. Michigan up 71-68.

38.0: Tim Hardaway, Jr. is quickly fouled and misses the front-end of the one-and-one.

29.1: Cody Zeller is fouled while shooting and cans both. Michigan up 71-70.

27.7: Oladipo fouls Michigan All-American Trey Burke on the inbound. Burke misses the front-end.

13.7: Indiana point guard Yogi Ferrell finds a cutting Zeller alone and he cans a lay-in.

0.0: Burke misses a tough left-handed layup, the put-back is a skosh too strong... and Indiana recovers. Game over, Indiana clinches the Big Ten Championship, 72-71.

ON A ROLL: The Golfer

I suspect that this tale -- sent in by Bernie -- is based on a true story.

Stan Waller was at the country club for his weekly round of golf. He began his round with an eagle on the first hole and a birdie on the second.

On the third hole he had just scored his first ever hole-in-one when his cell phone rang... It was a doctor notifying him that his wife had just been in a accident and was in critical condition and in ICU.

The man told the doctor to inform his wife where he was and that he'd be there as soon as possible. As he hung up he realized he was leaving what was shaping up to be his best ever round of golf. He decided to get in a couple of more holes before heading to the hospital. He ended up playing all eighteen, finishing his round shooting a personal best 61, shattering the club record by five strokes and beating his previous best game by more than 10. He was jubilant....

Then he remembered his wife. Feeling guilty he dashed to the hospital. He saw the doctor in the corridor and asked about his wife's condition.

The doctor glared at him and shouted, "You went ahead and finished your round of golf didn't you! I hope you're proud of yourself!"

"While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself at the country club your wife has been languishing in the ICU! It's just as well you went ahead and finished that round because it will be more than likely your last! For the rest of her life she will require round the clock care and you will be her care-giver! She will need IV's; you will have to change her colostomy bag every 3 hours; she will have to be spoon fed three times a day and don't forget the hygiene care!"

The man broke down and sobbed.

The doctor chuckled and said, "I'm just messing with you. She's dead.

What'd you shoot?"

Hey, hey, hey: don't blame the messenger!

Homer Bailey Delivers a No-Hitter for the Republican Cause

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey tossed a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. It was a much-needed victory for the Reds as they're battling the Washington Nationals for the best record in the National League heading into the post-season.

Lee forwards a note pointing out that Bailey's not only an ace on the mound, he's also a top gun when it comes to protecting the Republic:

You just never know who may show up at the Republican Victory Center in Kenwood [a northern suburb of Cincinnati].

Reds Pitcher Homer Bailey showed up last Saturday to encourage the volunteers to keep up the great efforts for the Republican Party. We still need volunteers and we are going to WIN this election!

Don’t pay attention to the polls which are aligned to the media. They want you to believe that the race is over. We need our voters to come out and vote. So let’s do everything possible to do just that and we WILL WIN!

Click here to find your local Victory Center. Take action. Your country needs you.

Exclusive Transcript of Funniest Joke at Tonight's DNC

Biff Spackle intercepted the complete transcript for tonight's DNC speeches using his l337 h4x0r skillz. He says the best joke is the following:

A man takes the day off work and decides to go out golfing.
He is on the second hole when he notices a frog sitting next to the green.
He thinks nothing of it and is about to shoot when he hears,
Ribbit 9 Iron.'

The man looks around and doesn't see anyone.
Again, he hears, 'Ribbit 9 Iron.'
He looks at the frog and decides to prove the frog wrong.
He puts the club away, and grabs a 9 iron.

Boom! He hits it 10 inches from the cup. He is shocked.

He says to the frog, 'Wow that's amazing..
You must be a lucky frog, eh?
The frog replies, 'Ribbit Lucky frog.'
The man decides to take the frog with him to the next hole.

'What do you think frog?' The man asks.
'Ribbit 3 wood.'
The guy takes out a 3 wood and, Boom! Hole in one...
The man is befuddled and doesn't know what to say.

By the end of the day,
the man's golfed the best game of golf in his life.
He asks the frog, 'OK where to next?'
The frog replies, 'Ribbit Las Vegas ...'

They go to Las Vegas and the guy says, 'OK frog, now What?'
The frog says, 'Ribbit Roulette.'

Upon approaching the roulette table, the man asks,
'What do you think I should Bet?'
The frog replies, 'Ribbit $3000, black 6.'

Now, this is a million-to-one shot to win, but
after the golf game the man figures what the heck.

Boom!

Tons of cash comes sliding back across the table.
The man takes his winnings and buys the best room in the Hotel.
He sits the frog down and Says,

'Frog, I don't know how to repay you. You've won me all this money and I am forever grateful.'

The frog replies, 'Ribbit Kiss Me.'
He figures why not, since after all the frog did for Him,
He deserves it...

With a kiss, the frog turns into a gorgeous 15-year-old girl.

"And that, your honor, is how the girl ended up in my room.
So help me God.
Or my name is not William Jefferson Clinton."

Elegant: Serena Williams celebrates her dominating Olympic performance with... "The Crip Walk"

And all this time, I thought tennis was supposed to be the classiest of sports.

Serena Williams dropped it like it was hot on Saturday, celebrating her first singles gold medal by performing an impromptu crip walk, a short dance move popularized by gang members in her hometown of Compton.

The move mostly passed by without incident because crip walk controversies date from the same era in which a bare bottom on "NYPD Blue" was considered risque. The dance was just a dance, a nice homage to Serena's hometown. But then someone overreacted and ginned up a phony controversy on this side of the Atlantic and now the very fabric of our culture is threatened because Serena chose to do a rhythmic shout-out.

Hey, it's great that Serena won a gold medal for the U.S.

I'm just not sure about the wisdom of turning each tennis match into an NFL touchdown celebration.

Photo: Female Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen looks perfectly natural to me

Oops. My bad. This is a photo of Vera De Milo.

On the other hand, this is Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen:

More than a few eyebrows were raised when Ye Shiwen, a 16-year-old Chinese swimmer, knocked five seconds off her personal best in the 400-meter individual medley. She even swam the last lap faster than [male] U.S. medal winner Ryan Lochte.

Commentators watching the race called it "unbelievable." But John Leonard, head of the American Swimming Coaches Association, went a big step further, saying her race "was reminiscent of some old East German swimmer."

... "If there are suspicions, then please lay them out using facts and data," Xu Qi, head of the Chinese swimming team. told the state news agency Xinhua. "Don't use your own suspicions to knock down others. This shows lack of respect for athletes and for Chinese swimming."

The final world from Olympic officials cleared the Chinese swimmer's name.

"She's clean. That's the end of the story," said Colin Moynihan, chairman of the British Olympic Association reporting on the results of official drug tests.

She looks perfectly natural to me, though she was reportedly ejected from a Tesco store for carrying around a six pack and two guns.

I'll be here all week. Remember to try the roast beef special... and to tip your waitresses.

Chart: President Obama far more interested in golf than the economy, unemployment or suffering Americans

As of last week, the president had played 102 rounds of golf since taking office. According to White House reporter Keith Koffler, each golf outing takes about five hours. Using arithmetic -- something apparently unfamiliar to Democrats, given their staunch refusal to pass a federal budget -- Obama has spent about 510 hours golfing.

This compares to a total of "412 hours ... in economic meetings or briefings of any kind", according to a time study published by The Government Accountability Insititute (PDF).

Even discounting his callous disregard for the Constitution, this president has no respect for the American people. He has no work ethic and no interest in the economy.

And please note: I'm not even counting the innumerable fundraisers and pickup basketball games, which also do absolutely nothing for Americans suffering in this, the Obama Depression.

There is nothing to say here except "Pau, look out!"

I think the technical term is "double posterization".
